I stopped by the Columbus Museum last Sunday to see their Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock and Roll Photography exhibit. I was alone in the gallery for a while and cannot really describe my feelings (perhaps “frisson”) while standing in front of iconic, life-size images of Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, photographed a couple of years before their deaths, staring back at me. There are lots of wonderful portraits and the prints are large (perhaps 30×40″) pigment prints on watercolor paper. Students, friends, photographers, music lovers, sixties survivors, everyone who cares about photography and the cultural phenomenon of rock music MUST see this exhibit. No excuses. KGray

Photopia is a Year Old and Growing!

Photopia, a photography group started a year ago, has grown to 48 members, including an active Fine Art Group which is heavily represented in the inaugural exhibit in our new gallery at the CSU Rankin Arts Photography Center. The other two sub-groups are the Professionals and the Photo Enthusiasts. We meet tomorrow night 7-9pm at the center, 1004 Broadway-please join us. More info on Photopia.

Kenny Gray Travels to Albany Museum of Art to Make Awards

Back in September, I was contacted by a representative of the Albany Artist’s Guild and asked to be the photography juror for their annual exhibit at the Albany Museum of Art, in Albany, Ga. So on Tuesday of the past week, I drove down and did my jury duty. The weather was beautiful and it was fun to visit the museum for the first time. I discovered a few gifted photographers, and some who were not; my biggest discovery however, was how accomplished Columbus Photographers are in comparison. The breadth of talent in our city is remarkable and it will only grow, supported by Photopia, the new classes in our program devoted to fine art photographers, and our beautiful new gallery. Exciting times ahead for Columbus photographers!

Photopia Member Renner Loney: Callaway Exhibit, Columbus Photographers 2011, Award at Columbus Artists Guild Exhibit

Renner Loney, a member of Photopia, is on a roll. Sixty-six of her nature photographs are currently on exhibit at the Discovery Center, Callaway Gardens, through Labor Day. Her work has also been accepted into the Columbus Photographers 2011 exhibit, to open September 17 in the new gallery space at the CSU Rankin Arts Photography Center. As if that were not enough, Renner exhibited in the recent annual Columbus Artists Guild exhibit and won an award for Excellence in Photography. Here’s the award-winning photograph, followed by a couple of images from her Callaway exhibit. Congratulations, Renner!

Ricky Kammenga: CSU Certificate, Photopia and two Exhibits

Ricky Kammenga has certainly made the most of the knowledge he acquired while earning his Digital Photography certificate and attending the Photopia fine art group meetings at the CSU Rankin Arts Photography Center for the past year. He recently had his work accepted into the prestigious national juried exhibition SlowExposures, which opens on September 16 at the historic R.F. Strickland Building in Concord, Ga. Ricky’s work will also be featured in the Columbus Photographers 2011 exhibit, opening September 17, 7-9:00 in the new Rankin Arts Photography Center Gallery. Congratulations, Ricky!

Lacey Dukes’ Super Summer: Exhibit, Award and a CSU Digital Photography Certificate

CSU Rankin Arts Photography Center student Lacey Dukes is poised for success as a photographer. Last week, she completed her portfolio, the last step in earning a CSU Digital Photography Certificate.

But wait, there’s more.

Lacey’s photograph of the H.L. Green storefront on Broadway, Five and Dime, won first place in the Columbus Museum’s exhibit Now and Then III community photo contest and exhibit.

David Maddox Earns Digital Photography Certificate

Deadline Approaching to Enter the Juried Exhibition: Columbus Photographers, 2011

Columbus Photographer: You are invited to submit work for the Columbus Photographers, 2011 Photography Exhibition, opening in September in Historic Uptown Columbus, Georgia. Photographers living, working or studying in Columbus are eligible. Accepted work will be exhibited in the 2nd floor gallery of Columbus State University’s Rankin Arts Photography Center, 1004 Broadway. You may submit (upload) up to six images, in one of two categories (General Public or Student/Photopia Member) . The entry fee varies, from 30.00-60.00, depending on which category you select. You may pay with a credit card or check. All work must be original, by the photographer, and produced during the last three years. The deadline for entries is midnight, June 30.

Awards: There will be $1000.00 in cash awards, and first, second and third place ribbons. The juror will also make merit awards.

Our distinguished juror is John Lawrence.

John D. Lawrence, Callaway Professor of Art and Design, is the Director of the Lamar Dodd Art Center of LaGrange College where he has established one of the largest college museum collections of twentieth century photography in the Southeast. John is an accomplished photographer, whose photographs are widely exhibited and have been published in two books, Faulkner’s Rowan Oak (1994, University of Mississippi Press) and Travels in Troup County (1996, Troup County Archives). He was the Curator of the 1981 “Artists in Georgia” exhibition, has served on committees for the Georgia Council of the Arts, and as a juror for the 1987 Southeastern Photography Grants awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2005, he was awarded a research grant by LaGrange College to photograph sites specific to St Francis of Assisi. In the Footsteps of St. Francis was held at the Photography Center at Rankin Square in Columbus, Georgia in 2007. In 2009 a retrospective exhibition of his work was presented at the Madison Morgan Cultural Center in Madison Georgia.

Columbus is enjoying a renaissance in creative photography centered around the CSU Rankin Arts Photography Center (RAPC), home of the CSU Digital Photography Certificate Program and the Photopia Photography Group. By Fall of 2011, RAPC will have a new 800 sq. ft. gallery, the first permanent gallery in the city devoted exclusively to exhibiting fine art photography. Columbus Photographers, 2011 will be the inaugural exhibit in this new space. I hope all Columbus area photographers will submit work for this exhibit and join us for the opening.
